Our Rabbi

Rabbi Ira Ebbin currently serves as the spiritual leader of the Young Israel of Stamford, a vibrant, growing congregation of over one hundred families in Stamford, Connecticut. Previously, he had served as the Assistant Rabbi of Congregation Anshe Sholom in New Rochelle, NY.

Rabbi Ebbin devotes a great deal of his time to filling the needs of his community at large. He is the Immediate Past President of the Board of Rabbis for the UJF of Stamford, New Canaan, and Darien. He is proud that all of the Rabbis (of the various denominations) represented in his area have a fine working relationship, as they collectively address community issues, as well as plan community events. Additionally, he is the President of the Vaad HaKashrus of Fairfield County, and on the Executive Board on the Rabbinical Council of America.

Rabbi Ebbin is a regular contributor to the “Rabbi’s Column” of the Stamford Jewish Voice. He has also written for the National Council of Young Israel’s Weekly Dvar Torah, as well as the Orthodox Union’s “Take five for Torah” website. He is also in the process of completing and publishing a research piece on the Prenuptial Agreement as a segment of the wedding ritual, and the Agunah Issue.

ebbinfamily Rabbi Ebbin received his rabbinic ordination from the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary of Yeshiva University in 2001. Since then he has completed his Masters’ Degree in Public Administration, for non-profit organizations, at Baruch College in NY. Asked why he pursued this particular Masters’ he replied, “In order to fill the needs of a religious congregation in today’s world, being a knowledgeable Torah scholar and teacher doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll know how to manage an efficient organization. Working together with lay people and building relationships with individuals and other institutions are key factors in forming the finest product to best fit the needs of your community.”

Teaching Torah is one of Rabbi Ebbin’s favorite aspects of his job, and he is always looking for ways to motivate his Baalei Batim to learn. His pet project is a family Torah study program which, with the help of a generous donor, he has been able to orchestrate and perfect over the years. For two hours once a week there is some form of Torah class or chavruta for every age group. The program has met much success, and is quite popular.

ebbinkidsBoth he his wife Chevi (Shurin) grew up in Brooklyn, NY, and they are blessed with three daughters, Shlomit, Shira Nacha, and Anat Shoshana.
