On Sunday May fourth, 2008, the Family Beit Midrash program of the Young Israel of Stamford sponsored a special day of solidarity with our missing soldiers. The day took place to draw attention not only to Gilad Shalit, Eldad Regev and Ehud Goldwasser, but to all of our soldiers who are still missing. The youth then divided by age and worked on three different projects based on a story that Gilad Shalit wrote when he was eleven years old. The younger children, led by Lenore Fogel - Chair and initiator of the program, created coloring books. The next group up created a quilt under the guidance of Shoshana Yaari, and is now displayed in the Simcha Hall. The teens painted a mural with the help of designers David and Sharon Shavrick. "The teen's mural is bringing in a beautiful new element to the Youth House" said Rabbi Naftali Wolfe who visited with his wife Navah, "I encourage everyone to take a look and congratulate our young artists." Jeff Kilstein, the Young Israel Youth Director, held a special family learning session, discussing the concept of not standing by while your neighbor is in danger. A festive Israeli dinner, prepared by YI Rosh Kitchen Marci Gordon and YI Chef Seth Young was served and followed by adult learning with Beis Binyomin Kollel Rabbi Daniel Newman on our responsibilities in helping those held captive. To culminate the spirit being the project, Shara Israel engaged the children into packing care packages for active Israeli duty soldiers along with letters of thanks and encouragement to our Chayelim.
The paint and supplies for the mural were generously donated by Brandman's Paint and Decorating, Keough's Turn of River Hardware and Ring's End Paint Centers in Darien.
